ten on tuesday: ten things I still want to accomplish this summer

Usually I participate in "ten on Tuesday" weekly. When I went to check the topic for today it was "favorite places to eat" and I am fairly certain that I have completed this topic more than a few times already and it simply does not inspire me at all today. Sorry to say I am skipping this topic this week :(
I think I will write instead about...... ten things I would still like to get accomplished before the summer is over.

1. Painting the barn
2. Prepping the garden spot for next summer
3. Planting more bulbs
4. Setting up a hanging spot on the south side of the Quonset for hanging baskets
5. Digging post holes
6. Putting up some fencing so we don't have our land "accidentally" farmed by the new neighbours.
7. Fall pruning
8. Chainsawing some dead trees before they fall on the house
9. Clearing out some more old and dying caragana
10. Playing! We have definitely not "played" enough this summer!

ten on tuesday: 10 favorite songs from the 80's

I am a HUGE fan of music and to pick an entire decade and only choose ten songs from it is extremely difficult, but I will do my best.

in no particular order:

1. Billy Joel: We didn't start the fire

2. Micheal Jackson: Human Nature

3. Information Society: What's on Your Mind (pure energy)

4. Roxette: The Look

5. Tone Loc: Funky Cold Medina

6. Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians: What I Am

7. The Police: Every Breath You Take

8. Corey Hart: Never Surrender

9. Glass Tiger: Someday

10. Cindy Lauper: All through the Night

OK. I think I could have done at LEAST a top 100 songs from the 80's I can do top songs from 1989 ALONE. That was too hard.

ten on tuesday: ten favorite sports plays ever

I have to admit, this topic will be a little tough for me because as much as I LOVE sports, I don't really have favorite plays in my mind that stick out above others.

I will do my best, but I doubt I can come up with ten.

#1. When Ben Johnson won the 100 meters in the 1988 Olympics I was THRILLED. I was devastated that he tested positive for steroids and that his medal was stripped from him. I feel especially bad knowing how much doping is a part of athletics and seeing how others have "fallen" as a result of their being on steroids. Sammy Sosa was on steroids when he broke home run records, and it seems like it is typical for MOST athletes who have such success to be taking performance enhancing drugs. Unfortunately the testing isn't mandatory and so we will never know the "real" ability of these athletes.

#2. I was in the crowd at the BYU vs Miami football game when Ty Detmer was the quarterback for BYU and they upset Miami who was ranked #1 in the nation. Being a part of that crowd was a thrill, even though I cannot recall one specific "play" it was a great game and a great season for BYU.

#3. Though it wasn't a favorite moment it was absolutely a memorable moment when Greg Louganis hit his head on the diving board in the Olympics. I happened to be watching when that happened. OUCH. Diving makes me nervous, and not just because of the speedos.

#4. Williams sisters playing against one another in the Wimbledon Final.

OK. Well It looks like I got four. I am brain dead, or it could be the mucus build up in my sinuses that is causing brain cramp.

Ten on Tuesday: 10 things I'd bring on a deserted island.

I need to make some assumptions in order to get the most out of my list here. Just because the place is deserted doesn't mean there weren't people here before who left someplace to stay!
1. Boat.
2. Bathing suit.
3. Suntan lotion.
4. Camera.
5. Ax
6. Waterproof matches
7. Something to cook in
8. A tarpaulin
9. First aid kit.
10. Iodine pills.

Ten on Tuesday: 10 Favorite Cities

Here are my top ten cities in no particular order...

1. Washington D.C.

I LOVE the history here and the museums. My spouse and I have yet to travel here together, but we will.

2. New Orleans.

Love the food, love the ambiance, love the history... I wish there were more interest in preserving and rebuilding this great city. What has happened here is a blemish on the history of the USA - right from the failure of the levees to the response of the government and the overall treatment of people here.

3. Gweru, Zimbabwe.

There are not very many pictures out there of Gweru and so this is an OLD photo. The clock no longer exists and I am certain my memory is what makes this place great and not the reality of it today.

4. Singapore.

What an amazing place. I am SOOOO very happy I was able to visit here while my parents still lived here. The culture and the city itself is just remarkable.

5. San Francisco.

Until just a few years ago I had never travelled here, nor did I have a desire to. Once I went I fell in love and would love to go back and spend more time being a tourist than we were able to.

6. Park City.

I loved to drive up here with my spouse whenever we had the opportunity. One would think living in Utah we would have gone to the Sundance festival but of course we didn't. I still love Park City in all seasons - to visit of course - too rich for my blood.

7. Bellingham, Wa.

I lived in Bellingham for only a few months, but long enough to fall in love with it. Small town feel, college community, great overall place to be.

8. Ogden, Ut.

It wasn't until we left that i appreciated how much I loved Ogden. Driving up and down I-15 I always saw the worst of it and thought it was a grimy, gross place to be. I miss it now though and wish I had appreciated it when I was there. Exit the freeway and you enter a whole different community!

9. Seattle, Wa

I LOVE Seattle. If I had to pick one place to be I would likely pick Seattle. I can't say enough about this great place.

10. Jasper, Alberta, Canada.
I think there might be a theme in my selections. I miss the mountains and the ocean! How on earth did I end up inland - close to the prairies?!

ten on tuesday: ten favorite places to shop.

So... Here we go. The topic for the week is ten of my favorite places to shop. I can honestly say I am NOT a good shopper. The shopping genes in my family belong to my father and my sisters. I hate grocery shopping. I almost LOATHE grocery shopping. Shopping tires me out and makes me grumpy.
When I am extremely well rested I can manage going into one or two places but that's about all.
For this reason I LOVE shopping on the internet and through catalogues.
That said, I don't do a lot of catalogue or internet shopping!
So I am going to give this a shot, but I am certain there are some "real" shoppers out there who will be disappointed in my list.

1. Bookstores. I adore bookstores. I could spend a LOT of time in bookstores or libraries, basically anywhere there is books. When we went to a conference in another community my spouse and I went to the library. Who does that? We are book nerds for sure. I think that this is probably the one place I could be for hours on end and not realize it.
2. Lee Valley. http://www.leevalley.com/
For anyone new to the blog, you may not know I am obsessed with all things related to pruning. Lee valley has a catalogue which I positively drool over. My spouse recently purchased me some felco pruning shears from Lee Valley.
3. Shepherds Bush http://www.shepherdsbush.net/
One of my all time favorite hobbies is cross stitching. When I lived I Ogden I never knew (ok I KINDA knew) the gem of a cross stitch store that I had right in m y own backyard. I LOVED every minute I spent in this store and since we have moved I have never found another like it. I miss it desperately and I would shop here in an instant if I was ever presented the opportunity again.
4. E-Bay I have actually found some pretty stuff on E-Bay. I have to be careful though cause I keep getting burned by the dang shipping fees. I was addicted a while to the whole bidding thing so I stopped myself from going there for a while.
5. Overstock.com. I like to shop online as I previously mentioned. Overstock. com has some RIDICULOUS deals.
6. Old Navy. I pretty much buy my jeans and t-shirts from Old Navy. Since I only wear jeans and t-shirts i guess you could say I buy my whole wardrobe at old Navy. Even my underwear!
7. Hardware stores. I don't know that I have always enjoyed shopping in hardware stores but I might lose my lesbian certificate if Home depot weren't on my list. (And I do like power tools.)
8. Ikea. There is no Ikea within hundreds of kilometers of our home, but I take every opportunity I can get to visit Ikea with my spouse.(everything is more fun to do with my spouse - if we are on time!) I love everything in this world - it's big enough to be a planet unto itself - I even like the food!
9. Local Farmers Markets Surprisingly we have lived in or town for over five years and as of yet we have not made it to our own farmer's market. This surprises me because I LOVE them typically. Last week when I was in a different town for school I even went to their local market on my lunch break. It sometimes disappoints me that they can turn in to "elitist" places and not places to get home grown, good food cheaply.
10. The Discovery Store. http://store.discovery.com/ There was a discovery store in the mall in Salt Lake City which we would visit after we finished in Barnes and Nobles. I loved the cool things in this store, even though I never actually purchased anything here because the prices were a little higher than I felt I wanted to pay, it was still a favorite place for window shopping.

Ten on Tuesday: ten great bands

The topic today is ten great bands. I was excited to do make this list and then I started it and got all confused. I like a LOT, I mean a LOT more than 8 bands, and what classifies a group as a band anyway? I think it means they play instruments, but does everyone have to play an instrument? What if there is just a lead singer who doesn't play anything? and how many people does there need to be in order to be counted as a band? 2? If the criteria is two people with only one playing a musical instrument you know what that means don't you?
Yup. The Carpenters are a band. Did you see that coming?

So assuming everyone thinks the Carpenters are a great band and it's a "gimme" then can I also assume that the Beatles are a "gimme"?

I am having a REAL hard time limiting this to ten.
In no particular order (and subject to change at any time)....

1. Creed

2. Dave Matthews Band

3. Toad the Wet Sprocket

4. Hedley

5. Maroon 5

6. Indigo Girls (are they a BAND? they play musical instruments so I included them)

7. The Police

8. Dixie Chicks

9. Journey

10. Matchbox20

But how do you not include INXS (the original), Guns N Roses, Bon Jovi and Aerosmith?

What about Warrant? I know you just starting humming "She's my cherry pie.." as soon as you read Warrant.
I don't know. I think this list is completely unsatisfying.

Ten on Tuesday: Ten words people would use to describe me

This week the topic is "ten words people would use to describe you"
Link to more participants HERE
Here are my ten:

1. Decisive.
2. Impatient.
3. Perfectionist
4. Sceptical
5. Respectful
6. Intelligent
7. Open-minded
8. Reliable
9. Humorous
10. "wet noodle".

I know that last one is two words, but it is a direct quote, so I actually KNOW that its words used to describe me.

Ten on Tuesday: ten underrated movies

Link to other participants by clicking on the logo:

1. Water. This movie actually won some awards and was even nominated for an Oscar. Still I don't think it got the acclaim it deserved. Many people are turned off by foreign films.

2. Serendipity. There are a LOT of sappy, predictable love story movies out there, but this has to be one of my all time favorites. Eugene Levy as a salesman in Bloomingdales is hysterical and the romantic notion of writing info into a book and "putting it out there" completely sucks me in.

3. So I Married an Axe Murderer. As far as I am concerned this is the best comedy of all time. Yeah. I said it. HANDS DOWN it is Mike Myers best film. I think Princess Bride DID get at kinds of critical acclaim, but this movie was sorely overlooked. (Don't get me wrong, I love PB, but I think SIMAM deserves it's props.)

4. Highlander. "Connor McLeod of the Clan McLeod." I honestly haven;t watched this movie in ages and ages --- maybe since 1986 when it was released? It is probably corny now with the advances in special effects, but it was epic.

5. Bloodsport. This movie as far as I am concerned is the ORIGIN of ultimate fighting. Ultimate fighting nowadays has NOTHING on the fights when they started -- back when there were no rules and the fights were so brutal they were illegal. Don't get me wrong. I watch UFC, and I like it, but it is so "clean" it is not even comparable to the GOOD old days. I can honestly say this is the only movie I would EVER recommend with Jean Claude Van Damme in it.

6 .High Art Lesbian movies are ALL underrated. Let me clarify. Lesbian movies for the most part SUCK... but there are one or two or three that I would watch a few times and even tell my straight friends to watch. But for the most part - they are low budget and BAD -- and most of them don't even have lesbians as actresses which makes any kind of intimate scene "AWKWARD".

7. Bound Might as well tie me up right now. GREAT movie and totally under the radar. (Should I say gaydar? LOL) I crack myself up.

8. But I'm a Cheerleader So I am on a bit of a lesbian theme here, but I am not deluding myself. I know that most straight people won't ever watch either of the two previous movies I just listed. They MIGHT watch this one though and it wouldn't be half bad. I know it glosses over issues and there are some jokes specifically meant for a homosexual audience, but I remember thinking that there were parts that closely resembled real life and what it was like to "come out".

9. The Other Sister. Giovanni Ribisi is one of my favorite actors and he is excellent in this movie. I am also a huge fan of Diane Keaton who doesn's disappoint in this film

10. Fargo. This movie won a BOAT load of awards but I am putting it here because even though it won so much I have never met anyone who has said "Fargo, what a GREAT movie." I completely love it and I ADORE Frances McDormand.

Honorable mentions.

These movies actually won awards, but I still think they were underrated. Sometimes winning an awards doesn't mean the movie was "popular" or as highly rated as i think it should have been.....
Willow
. Willow was actually nominated for (and won) some awards, but overall it was underrated. Great family show and another predecessor to the fantasy movies hyped so much nowadays. I think credit should be given to movies who did so much with relatively none of the special effects available now.
Much Ado About Nothing This is one of my favorites of Shakespeare and a great movie. I don't think making a movie of Shakespeare is any easy task and I applaud the makers of this movie for doing a great job.
Good Will Hunting Another award winning movie. This is probably the movie I have watched the most in my life - and for a "one time only" movie watcher like myself, that is saying a LOT.
Spanglish This is my favorite of all Adam Sandler films. The cast is fantastic and it is written SOOO well. Award winner, but underrated.

ten on Tuesday

The topic for this week is: Ten ways you know you are getting older.
1. The last time I was in an elevator the music was a song I knew the lyrics to!
2. I like to take naps and I wish my kids did.
3. I graduated from high school before some of the kids I work with were even born. ACK!
4. When you add together the first number of my age and the second number of my age, it is almost a "teen" number :(
5. I have been out of high school for more years than I was IN school.
6. Time Life commercials on television are selling compilations of music I LIKE.
7. Micheal Jackson is 50 years old.
8. I remember when Ron Howard was "Richie Cunningham".
9. My parents are GRAND PARENTS!
10. I actually stopped channel surfing on THE WEATHER CHANNEL (but just for a minute.)

Ten on Tuesday: Ten least liked foods

I have decided to limit my ten on Tuesday to foods I have actually tasted (or have the potential to taste) because really - there's a LOT of stuff out there I would not put near my mouth folks and it's highly unlikely I will ever encounter something like Yak milk so I won't list it.

1. Eggs with raw (not HARD) yolks.
This is actually so bad for me I can't even sit at the same table as someone who has a runny yolk egg because it makes me WANT to gag. Or actually gag. And dip your toast in it? I am dry heaving as I am writing this. For real.

2. Eggnog.
I don't actually remember ever actually consuming egg nog because I envision raw egg - see number 1. It will never touch these lips.

3. Meat that is not VERY well done. (burnt)
If I see pink - even a hint of pink - in meat, it has the same effect on me as egg yolk. My spouse has to hide her steak when we are eating in a restaurant because I will be unable to consume my food if I see the BLOOODDD in hers.

4. Kidney.
We used to have steak and kidney pie. It has been YEARS since we had it, I just don't think you can get kidney in a grocery store can you? Anyway I don't care that I haven't had it because it is nasty.

5. Sauerkraut.
Had it once, ate it all because we were guests. Hated it.

6. Anything on a bone.
That's right. I think I might be almost able to be vegetarian because I can't eat ANYthing on a bone. no ribs, no chicken leg, no t-bone steak. Where there are bones there are veins. You can actually see the vessels in which BLOOOOODDDDDDDD flowed. Sometimes people even can't bite through them and they have these stringy things in their mouths. Oh. Nastiness.

7. Lobster.
Not only does lobster have a bone - it has an EXOSKELETON. Plus it screams when it is cooked. PASS!

8. Fish.
Tastes fishy.

9. Milk.
Milk is a necessary evil in my life. I drink chocolate milk on occasion and I put milk on my cereal but I do not like the taste of plain milk nor do I like the fact that it is so full of hormones because they basically have to keep cows lactating to produce milk (so it is unnatural......)

Ten on Tuesday: things I like to do on vacation

Today the topic for Ten on Tuesday is "Things I like to do on vacation".

You can link to others who participate by clicking on the little picture above.
It has been a LONG time since I have been on a vacation but it is my goal to go on one with my spouse SOON.
1. I like to go to Disneyland. Vacations should all happen in and around Disneyland. Disneyland needs to be SOME part of the equation. I suppose it's not realistic to go to Disneyland for EVERY vacation, so I will continue with the next 9 answers and try to come up with something else I like to do on a vacation.
2. Turn of cell phone and internet. (This is extremely difficult for me, but a requirement for a REAL vacation).
3. Take insane amounts of photographs. (My spouse is in charge of this).
4. READ. I don't care where I am or what I am doing. If I am on vacation there needs to be a book close by.
5. Be WARM so I can wear SANDALS and T-Shirts and Shorts ONLY. Warmth is a requirement. My spouse really wants to go to Alaska or to the Northwest Territories. While I am closer to considering the idea than ever before, I am still reluctant because of the temperature.
6. Visit someplace I have never visited before. Why go to the same place and do the same thing over and over? (I would do this if I had a cabin.) Until the time I HAVE a cabin, the whole concept of vacation for me means doing something I haven't done before in a place I haven't been before (unless it's Disneyland)!
7. Eat good food. Preferably something FRESH and LOCAL. (or Mexican!)
8. LAUGHTER. I need to laugh on vacation. No good going some place and being all stressed about it. Believe it or not, between my spouse and I, we can pretty much find something to be stressed about without much help. Vacations should be stress free and laughter filled.
9. Forget about work. I would like to do this on a vacation. I have yet to accomplish it. It is a goal I am working towards.
10. Buy a t-shirt (or get a tattoo). I'm easy either way.

Ten on Tuesday: Ten songs I hate

This week for Ten on Tuesday the topic is "Ten songs I hate". The first three or four were very easy to come up with, the others it took a little longer. If you want to share in my pain feel free to click on the title of each song to go and listen to it on youtube.

Here you go.

1. LaBamba
2. Say What you Need to Say. John Mayer
He said it and then he kept saying it over and over and OVER.
3. Keep Bleeding. Leona Lewis
My ears are bleeding because I am listening to John say what he needs to say.
4. Tattoo. Jordin Sparks
I think I have already discussed why I hate this song.
5. Walking on Broken Glass. Annie Lennox
6. Achy Breaky Heart. Billy Ray Cyrus
Billy Ray Cyrus couldn't even afford a decent haircut, how could he afford to pay someone to write good lyrics?
7. Sussudio. Phil Collins
What the hay does Sussudio mean? I googled it and it is apparently a name for a girl but I have never met anyone with the name. Sorry if you are out there and your name is Sussudio. Your parents must have done some BAD drugs and listened to BAD music.
8. Dancing on the Ceiling. Lionel Ritchie
9. Anything at all by the Tragically Hip
10. Rico Suave. Gerardo

ten on tuesday; ten things I won't miss about winter

This weeks topics: Ten things I won't miss about winter. ONLY ten?

1. -40. -35. -25. -20. -15. -7. (When it gets to about -5 I can tolerate the cold).

2. Plugging vehicles in - and unplugging them when I remember to.

3. Forgetting to unplug the vehicle and driving away while plugged in.

4. The claustrophobic feeling I get when wearing my winter coat.

5. Taking off my boots to walk into a place like the doctors office and promptly stepping in the water left by someone who didn't take off their boots.

6. Trying to dress my son in all his winter attire as he screams and twists and turns.

7. Finding my sons mittens outside where he has taken them off and thrown them, then trying to put them back on him.

8. Driving to work in tinkey winkey with a heater strong enough to melt my eyeballs in their sockets but not hot enough to melt the ice from the inside of the windows. Having to scrape the inside of the window while squinching my melting eyeballs.

9. Driving to work in the dark, then driving home in the dark.

10. Being cold.

Ten on Tuesday: Ten songs that describe me or my life

You can check out others links if you click on the little logo above.
Here are ten songs that describe me or my life, in no particular order...

1. Lion Sleeps Tonight.
My family always sang no matter where we were going. We would sing if we were in the car 5 minutes or 5 days. Lion Sleeps Tonight is a song we loved to sing and everyone had a part. If only Justin had the same falsetto now that he did then.....

2. Suddenly. Soraya

3. Ghost. Indigo Girls

I was introduced to the Indigo Girls by the first woman who ever kissed me. This song was the one I listened to over and over as I was struggling with my identity. I don't think there is any one song that I feel better describes my "coming to terms with my gay" life. It took a lot of years for that to happen. It's still a work in progress.

Here are the lyrics:
There's a letter on the desktop
that i dug out of a drawer
the last truce we ever came to
in our adolescent war
and i start to feel the fever
from the warm air through the screen
you come regular like seasons
shadowing my dreams
and the mississippi's mighty
but it starts in minnesota
at a place that you could walk across
with five steps down
and I guess that's how you started
like a pinprick to my heart
but at this point you
rush right through me
and i start to drown
and there's not enough room
in this world for my pain
signals cross and love gets lost
and time passed makes it plain
of all my demon spirits
i need you the most
i'm in love with your ghost
i'm in love with your ghost
dark and dangerous like a secret
that gets whispered in a hush
(don't tell a soul)
when i wake the things i
dreamt about you
last night make me blush
and you kiss me like a lover
then you sting me like a viper
i go follow to the river
play your memory like a piper
and i feel it like a sickness
how this love is killing me
i'd walk into the fingers
of your fire willingly
and dance the edge of sanity
i've never been this close
i'm in love with your ghost
unknowing captor
you never know how much you
pierce my spirit
but i can't touch you
can you hear it
a cry to be free
oh i'm forever under lock and key
as you pass through me
now i see your face before me
i would launch a thousand ships
to bring your heart back to my island
as the sand beneath me slips
as i burn up in your presence
and i know now how it feels
to be weakened like achilles
with you always at my heels
this bitter pill i swallow
is the silence that i keep
it poisons me i can't swim free
the river is too deep
though i'm baptized by your touch
i am no worse than most
in love with your ghost
you are shadowing my dreams

4. Baby Mine. Dumbo Movie.
This is the lullaby I sing to my boys.

5. My Immortal. Evanescence
This song can make me cry for the ones I have lost.

6. Everything. Alanis Morissette

7. You'll never walk alone - Liverpool FC Anthem
Liverpool FC is my team. The team I have grown up with and the anthem which is the anthem of my life also.

8. Do you hear the people sing? Les Mis
There is such a huge part of my soul which shouts out for the oppressed. Though the oppressed I am thinking of are my country men and women of Africa, this song resonates with me.

9. Say You'll be Mine. Amy Grant
I am not a huge Amy Grant song but I sing this to my spouse until she says 'I'll be your baby". It's fun. (for me anyway!)

10. Every Breath You Take. Police

I have a great friendship with my cousin/sister Tracy. I pretty much spent my entire infancy with her and her brother and when I was a teenager I spent summers with her and had immense amounts of fun. When she went on a mission I used to sing "Since you're gone I've been lost without a "Trace".

And I am sorry but it is completely impossible for me to give just ten, so I will give some honorable mentions also...

Pachelbel Canon in D
Billy Gilman. One Voice
Alabama. Angels Among us.
I believe that the people here on earth ARE the angels. You can make a choice every day to bless the lives of people around you. Sometimes you don't even know if the kindness you perform will bless another or not. But it's people - here - that are the angels. I've met one or two and I hope at some point in my life I have been one, if only to a foster kid.

Paul McCartney. This One
P!nk. Leave Me Alone.
Pass the Dutchie. Musical Youth
This is the first RADIO song that I remember. Prior to this moment in my life the only songs I knew were the songs my parents listened to or the songs from church. While I love these, Pass the Dutchie marked my own transition to musical knowledge.

I'm out of time, but I will be adding to this list for sure...

ten on tuesday: ten favorite places to shop

I am actually not a great shopper. I like to go in, get what I want and leave - pretty much. I can however spend HOURS upon hours in bookstores, but other than that, shopping has never been a forte of mine.

I like to shop
1. On e-bay
2. At Amazon.ca
3. I LOVE looking at catalogues of fun stuff like in the "signals" catalogue, but I have never ordered from there, but that's kinda like window shopping so I am counting it.
4. Bookstores. Preferably ones where you can buy lesbian and gay literature which surprisingly is not easy to find.
5. MICHEALS - for the cross stitch stuff. Actually my FAVORITE place to shop for cross stitch stuff is a place in Ogden Utah called "..... k, I am going to have to remember what it is called, but it was a cross stitch store only and I would sneak in there and think I had died and gone to heaven. ah HAH! Shepherd's Bush.
6. Staples or anywhere that has stationary. Pens and pencils make me happy.
7. Pet stores. I don't particularly like the "pet" purchasing part of pet stores because I think they contribute to puppy mills, AND I think you can do better by getting a pet from a rescue organization, BUT I do like browsing through pet toys and I like taking my pet into a store.
8. Farmer's Markets.
9. Toy stores - not like Toy's R us, but smaller, independent toy stores where the toys may be more expensive but there are cool things to peruse.
10. Cigar shops. Oh the loverely smell of a cigar shop. I think I might start smoking a pipe just for the smell of the pipe tobacco.
